Problems with gnome-volume-manager et al in sarge

I started playing with gvm/hal/dbus/pmount today, but have had some
problems.

1. gnome-volume-manager is not started on login-- but I can start it
from the command line (and thus add it to the session at a later date).

2. When I insert a data cd into my cdrom drive, gvm/hal/pmount mounts
the cd 7 times (as scd0 through scd6). If I insert an audio cd,
gnome-cd is launched 7 times.

3. I can't unmount the cd from within nautilus (right click on device,
Unmount volume). It said I wasn't the one who mounted it. Have to
unmount each from the command line as root.

I am in the plugdev group. I removed /media/* (but they get recreated
when I insert a cd). I removed the entries from /etc/fstab. Obviously
I am doing something wrong, and am the first to admit that I am very new
to gvm/hal/dbus/pmount. I googled for documentation, but couldn't find
much. I looked in /usr/share/doc/gvm|hal|pmount but couldn't make much
headway beyond what I have already done.

Up to date sarge, as of today:

ii kernel-image-2.6.8-1-686 2.6.8-10
ii gnome-session 2.8.1-3 The GNOME 2 Session Manager
ii gnome-volume-m 1.1.2-4 GNOME daemon to auto-mount and manage
media
ii pmount 0.4.3-1 mount removable devices as normal user
ii hal 0.4.2-2 Hardware Abstraction Layer
ii libhal-storage 0.4.2-2 Hardware Abstraction Layer - shared

ii libhal0 0.4.2-2 Hardware Abstraction Layer - shared

When inserting a cd, gvm outputs this:
