I think it's great to provide a different interface that many people
will find easier to use.
Why does that requiring breaking the existing method? Especially since
it's not just a matter of not reading .Xmodmap, but detecting it, and
telling people to change?
Not to mention that Xmodmap is useful in all desktop environments, not
just GNOME.
