Well, you need a window manager. For a minimal but familiarish system,
sawfish and window maker are good choices.

Well, yes, but I've already got xfce4 which gives me the desktop environment, not just a desktop. What I'm looking for are the basic support packages/libraries without having to install 3/4s of gnome.
Is there anyway of doing that?
I've already asked on the gnome lists, but they're all scared of Debian.
