I didn't have nautilus installed before I installed the 'gnome' package, indeed.
This makes Sebastien think you hit this bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=126230 Can you try the suggestions in that bug and see what happens?
What suggestions should I try?I checked some settings with gconf-editor, but apps/nautilus/preferences/background_set is set to false, which should be OK. desktop/gnome/background/draw_background is set to true, which should also be OK.
