The suggested way is to edit /etc/fonts/local.conf, and add a "<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts</dir>" somewhere between "<fontconfig>" and "</fontconfig>". Or, if you haven't edited /etc/fonts/local.conf, you could probably just run "dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig" and answer yes to the bitmap font question.
