painfully slow gtk2 apps

when i open a menu from the menu bar, it takes nearly a 500ms to draw
the widget. first the box appears, then the text, and finally the icons.
very nasty i say.
no matter if i remove the icons - its just too slow and unresponsive.
same behaviour when i use the nv drivers instead of the nvidia ones. 

by the way: gnome-theme-propperties capplet just hangs without response
on startup - no crash, simply hangs - here are the last lines of the
strace output:
