I also have been seeing this behaviour. In my experience it's not about
how many things you click on; the application presenting the File Open
dialog hangs about 5 seconds after displaying it. My LANG is set to C,
and I don't have LC_COLLATE set.

All my GNOME2 apps are broken this way, without apparent exception.

Just a few more data points. All this is on Sid, by the way.
