You might like to try installing GDM with: apt-get install gdmThis gives you a nice graphical way of logging into your system, and can start Gnome for you automatically. The errors you're seeing are because the programs you're running cannot find the display server (the X server) to connect to, either because it isn't running, or because your environment isn't set correctly. GDM is a nice solution to both those problems.
