It's not the same problem but here's something I found yesterday,
installing from scratch a new machine, straight to Gnome 2.

I installed Gnome (apt-get install gnome didn't work, I didn't look
further and installed each and every dependencies).

Then I wanted to install evolution.  But evolution needs libcapplet0
which has been pulled off the archive (it is built from the
gnome-control-center sources).  Luckily we now have
snapshot.debian.net and everything went perfectly afterwards.
