Well, I suppose you could antialias a bitmapped font: just render the
glyphs twice as big in each dimension and then downsample. ;)

I have some more information about configuring GTK2 (with a focus on
Japanese, but with other good information) here:

But I warn you: some of it is incorrect.  You get to experiment. :)
