/debian in upstream (was Re: Wow! I didn't know this list existed!)

In my experience, having the /debian dirs in CVS is not necessarily a
good idea. In fact, it can be rather awkward, and difficult to manage
properly. To be used effectively, a lot of the files in /debian would
need to be updated automatically by either the automake or autoconf
tools. Setting this up to work right is non-trivial at this point.
(Even for some less-than-100% definition of "right".)
I have one package, WMRack, which I maintain completely: both the
"upstream" sources and the Debian packages. But so far, I have found
it much easier to keep my "upstream" sources completely free of any
debian stuff. And that's on a one-man project.
That's not to say that it can't be done -- in fact, it was done for
(IIRC) most of gnome 1.0. But I don't think it was done well, and I'd
rather not repeat the experiment unless it can be made to work better
this time.
