Please check your sound setup ! If your sound system is not setup and gnome is
setup using sound it takes forever to startup. This helped for me, when setting
up a new woody installment.

I agree, gnome works great on a pure Woody install, but one need some hand
installment too. I, for instance, needed to install sawfish-gnome by hand, or
gnome had no WM.
