Ok:

After logging in at the non-X login prompt I type "startx &".
This is my .xsession:

---
export WINDOW_MANAGER=icewm-gnome
exec gnome-session
---

where the first line is neccessary, because gnome-wm starts
icewm (not icewm-gnome) with the first session when i dont
set WINDOW_MANAGER.

I thought this would be the recommended way for starting gnome

I will now delete all gnome from my machine and re-install.
May take a while...
