when testing the upgrade of golang-github-gabriel-vasile-mimetype-dev to version 1.4.9 ratt showed rclone breaking. As rclone is severely outdated (we have the same upstream version in oldstable, stable and sid despite there were lots of upstream releases) I wonder whether it makes sense to hold back updates because of breakages in a package in such bad condition.

I know this is probably the reply you wanted, but: have you tried updating rclone?

Updating rclone is a deep rabbit hole since it has so many dependencies that involve the web of Google and Azure packages. There's a bug report against rclone that is tracking this.
