Package: tzdata
Version: 2017b-0+deb8u1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

After upgrading tzdata from 2016j-0+deb8u1 to 2017a-0+deb8u1 the timezone abbreviation for the local time stopped showing on date and on our email timestamps. Still happening on 2017b-0+deb8u1

Until version 2016j-0+deb8u1, the timezone abbreviation (for example BRT, BRST) was shown. After the upgrade, the abbreviation was replaced by the time offset (-03, -02)

Downgrading the tzdata package alone reverts to the working situation:

root@gronholm:~# date

root@gronholm:~# date +%Z
-03
root@gronholm:~# apt-get install tzdata=2016j-0+deb8u1

Yes, I confirm this is intentional. Over the last few releases, all
invented abbreviations have been removed. They tend to conflict with
each other.

I am therefore closing this bug.
