Just tagging this bug, since it was observed this morning on one of my
Lenny machines. The others I've checked don't seem to be leaking file
descriptors.

I concur that this looks similar to Red Hat bug #428837, but I'm not
certain that it is. The RedHat patch is partially applied in
libnss-ldap_251-7.5etch1 and appears to be fully applied in 261-2.1. If
this were the cause, I'd not expect it to occur on lenny.

I'm going to play with it some more to see if I can trigger the problem
reliably. I have a few ideas for things to try, but I'll need to do them
during a maintenance window.
