Thanks to Mika Prokop, I now know the solution:

14:36⎜* mira|AO:#grml tg@frozenfish:~ $ sudo touch SID/etc/hosts

Maybe the postinst scripts should do that [ ! -x /etc/hosts ] auto-
matically? It’s still a rather serious bug for chroots.
