FWIW etch users should run 2.6 by now, hence the upgrade won't be messy if they follow /etch/ release notes. Remember that in /etch/ squid e.g. does not work if you don't have a 2.6 kernel. So yes, release notes will have to put in big red capital letters "before anything else, upgrade to linux-image-2.6".
