I just hit this problem (or maybe a similar one) when upgrading from 
2.6.1-1+b1 - unfortunately in my case it rendered the system unusable. 
Any command now segfaults:

~# cat
cat[1240]: segfault at 00000000 eip 00000000 esp bfac0dac error 4

Some simpler commands run to completion before segfaulting, so I was 
able to use "mount" and view some logs using "dd". Some of the lines at 
the end of dpkg.log (copied by hand):

upgrade libc6 2.7.1-1+b1 2.7-3
...
status half-installed libc6 2.6.1-1+b1
status unpacked libc6 2.7-3
status half-configured libc6 2.7-3

This is an i386 system.

Any ideas on how to proceed are welcome (especially if they don't 
require using a rescue CD which I don't have at the moment).
