On x86_64, mostly debian etch. After upgrading libc6 to unstable, I can no longer compile anything. 

echo "int main() {return 0;}" > test.c
gcc test.c

/lib/libc.so.6: file not recognized: File format not recognized
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
Upgrading binutils from 2.17-3 to 2.17cvs20070426-4 fixes the problem. Perhaps libc6 should have a versioned conflict with binutils?
