Bug#330897: locales: POSIX used, but not chosen

Package: locales
Version: 2.3.5-6
Severity: normal

Something odd seems to have happened to my locales, today. Although I
didn't ask for it, the LC settings have changed to POSIX:

diz $ locale
LANG=
LC_CTYPE="POSIX"
LC_NUMERIC="POSIX"
LC_TIME="POSIX"
LC_COLLATE="POSIX"
LC_MONETARY="POSIX"
LC_MESSAGES="POSIX"
LC_PAPER="POSIX"
LC_NAME="POSIX"
LC_ADDRESS="POSIX"
LC_TELEPHONE="POSIX"
LC_MEASUREMENT="POSIX"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="POSIX"
LC_ALL=

which confuses some apps, e.g. Firebird/Thunderbird (non-Debian) since
they're not expecting it.

In addition, starting X via gdm gives me the addition of
LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8, which I also didn't ask for:

locale
LANG=
LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC="POSIX"
LC_TIME="POSIX"
LC_COLLATE="POSIX"
LC_MONETARY="POSIX"
LC_MESSAGES="POSIX"
LC_PAPER="POSIX"
LC_NAME="POSIX"
LC_ADDRESS="POSIX"
LC_TELEPHONE="POSIX"
LC_MEASUREMENT="POSIX"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="POSIX"
LC_ALL=

Have I mucked something up somewhere without realising it?

thanks much.

cheers,
calum.
