running ls in shell mode on ia64 results in the following error:
dannf@krebs:~$ ls
init.c:259: __pthread_initialize_minimal_internal: Assertion `__default_stacksize % __sysconf (_SC_PAGESIZE) == 0' failed.
Aborted

To reproduce:
 1) run emacs
 2) meta-x shell
 3) ls
