It's both times on the same machine with the same kernel. It's
an x86_64 2.6.5 kernel.
The i386 part is a chroot with sarge i386 on it, amd64 is a
pure64 amd64 chroot.

Right. And I only looed at the linuxthread sources.
So the question becomes isn't NPTL build for amd64? It atleast
has an x86_64 dir in it.
