There was some discussion of this issue on the libc-alpha list at the
time.  See http://sources.redhat.com/ml/libc-alpha/2002-05/msg00052.html
and the ensuing thread.

To summarise, Geoff thought that this problem should be fixed in the
kernel, because leaving stale data in the icache was a potential
security hole.  It doesn't look like there was ever a real resolution to
this.  As far as I can tell, the patch was never applied upstream.
