Let's see.

  - Separate maintenance - it's a logically distinct component.
  - Ability to maintain (more easily) a separate .orig.tar.gz and
    .diff.gz.
  - Easier compartmentalization for non-Linux ports, which the new
    packaging is not yet friendly for.
  - 7MB diff.gz's make ftp-master cry.
