libc6 and recent testing upgrades

Hi,

I'm not confident enough to submit this as a bug report, so I thought I
would post these comments to the maintainers list here.

Please forward this to relevent person/party if I've sent this to the
wrong place :-(

I'm currently running testing (i386). On Friday last week I did an apt-get
update/upgrade on my system, which included a new libc6 and whole heap
of new packages.

Shortly after, I noticed things like /bin/ls, /usr/bin/tar, and other
utilities failing.

For example, I tried to do an "ls -l /usr/src/linux" and it would freeze,
consuming 100% and consuming memory (up to around 400Mb when I killed it).

I also could not extract any .tar.gz files. Tar failed in a similar way.

I restored my system from backups to _before_ I did the upgrade, and
everything worked fine. I then did the apt-get update/upgrade again and
tested various commands. I was able to re-create the above problems.

I then restored my system a second time, held back libc6 with
"dpkg --set-selections" and upgraded. Everything worked fine (and is
still working).

The only thing different about my system is that I am running XFS 1.1
and a patched XFS kernel.

I also checked my memory with memtest86 and it passed all tests.

Are you aware of any issues with libc6 and testing? I'm at a loss to
figure out what caused this problem. And I am really scared of upgrading
now! :(

cheers,
Ian.
