On solaris, it is possible to use the 'compat' mode in NSS with LDAP
directories. Now that the libnss-ldap package start to support
netgroups, the compat module should support using netgroups and user
info from LDAP.  See
<URL:http://www.sunmanagers.org/pipermail/summaries/2002-January/002093.html>
for an exampple on how this is done no Solaris.

This bug is fixed in glibc version 2.3.2-5 now in Sid. It was fixed
with the following commits to glibc CVS (from the upstream changelog):

2003-06-07  Thorsten Kukuk  <kukuk@suse.de>

        * nis/nss_compat/compat-grp.c: Remove unused nis_first variable.
        (getgrent_next_file): Don't store group name to early in blacklist.

        * nis/nss_compat/compat-pwd.c (internal_getpwuid_r): Save strlen result
        and use memcpy instead of strcpy.

2003-06-27  Thorsten Kukuk  <kukuk@suse.de>

        * nis/nss_compat/compat-initgroups.c: Don't use our own NIS/NIS+
        functions, dlopen corresponding NSS module instead.

2003-06-17  Thorsten Kukuk  <kukuk@suse.de>

        * nis/Makefile: Remove NIS/NIS+ files from nss_compat module.
        * nis/nss_compat/compat-grp.c: Don't use our own NIS/NIS+ functions,
        dlopen corresponding NSS module instead.
        * nis/nss_compat/compat-pwd.c: Likewise.
        * nis/nss_compat/compat-spwd.c: Likewise.
        * nis/nss_compat/compat-initgroups.c: Disabled for now.
        * nss/Versions: Export __nss_lookup_function.

Because of this, I am closing this bug.
