This is not the problem, though, apparently. While looking about which libraries jabberd loads, I discovered that it loaded another library (for ICQ transport) which has vanished from Debian in the meantime and was built some time ago with older versions of gcc and libc6. Disabling the loading of this library also cured the segfault, so it is probably the culprit ... Sorry for bothering you, Daniel
