That is interesting.  This bug only shows up if one upgrades to the
unstable debian packages, so something has changed with either libc or the
packaging of same.  Should I report the bug to the JDK for Linux group or
to Sun?

Any suggestions on a work-around?  I tried to re-install the 2.0.7 libs on
my machine and nearly lost everything.  I tried unpacking the 2.0.7 package
into another directory and using LD_LIBRARY_PATH to provide java with the
libs it had worked with, but then I had problems with the X libs and it
turned into a mess.  I can't find a version between 2.0.7 and 2.1.1 to try.
