With Shapely 2.0 nearing release, now was a good time to test the impact of the new major version.

Not all rdeps are compatible with Shapely 2.0 as expected.

A few FTBFS, and two don't due to test failures being ignored.

The biggest blocker is Cartopy whose failure also affects other packages.

While it seems that Shapely 2.0 will be released before the freeze in February, it is unlikely that the rdeps will be patched by then.

Bugreports:

 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?users=debian-gis@lists.debian.org&tag=shapely-2.0
Shapely 2.0 has been released.

The test failure in pyresample was fixed in the the mean time, and Cartopy 0.21.1 also fixed compatibility with Shapely 2.0 which affected pyresample and geopandas.

mapproxy our last unfixed package, unfortunately upstream development is not very active so it will likely take a while to get fixed.

osmnx has a patch which is already applied upstream.

python-dicompylercore doesn't have a fix yet, but upstream is aware of the issue.

If there are fixes for the remaining issues in January, we can move Shapely 2.0 to unstable before the freeze. Otherwise it will stay in experimental until the bookworm release.

Kind Regards,

Bas
