Maybe it could be a good idea to work together ? instead of duplicate ubuntu packages and efforts.

If you need only the ubuntu packages, you can use these packages of gdal
1.5.3: http://dev5.mapgears.com/ubuntu/pool/main/
I built them and they work properly.

great, thanks
NOTE: that's a temporary repository. I plan to create another one at
"Launchpad's Personal Package Archives" as soon as i have free time :P

hmm, mayte I should move http://les-ejk.cz/ubuntu there as well

Hi,
though I'm using Ubuntu, I never had problems compiling GIS packages
with debian configuration files from svn.debian.org

however, now, I have such problem:

gdal 1.5.3 (from gdal.org)
gdal/trunk/debian (from
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-grass/packages/gdal/trunk/?rev=0&sc=0)

dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot

libruby1.8 1.8.7.72-1ubuntu0.1
ruby 4.2
ruby1.8 1.8.7.72-1ubuntu0.1
ruby1.8-dev 1.8.7.72-1ubuntu0.1

Thanks
