[DebianGIS] gdal-ecw compilation

Hi all.
Is anybody aware of a step-by-step howto for compiling gdal with ECW support 
(the debian way, starting from deb-src and ending with checkinstall)?
I'm trying to get the SDK, but what I've found on the ermapper web 
sitehttp://www.ermapper.com/  is an .exe file.
If nothing is available, I volunteer to provide one (as soon as I succeed). 
Any help would be appreciated.
