Bug#878338: gcc-defaults FTBFS with debhelper 10.9

I'm running into this on ia64 now but I'm not sure whom to blame.

"Unknown option or error" doesn't make it seem that debhelper is
working as expected, is it? At least there should be a comprehensible
error message.
