Package: gcc-4.8
Version: 4.8.0-8
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

After the last gcc-4.8 update, building the 3.10-rc3 and later kernel
for x86-64 (optimised for Opteron/Athlon64 architecture) failed:

/tmp/cc1gDLm4.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/cc1gDLm4.s:43: Error: expecting string instruction after `rep'
/tmp/cc1gDLm4.s:147: Error: expecting string instruction after `rep'
/tmp/cc1gDLm4.s:149: Error: expecting string instruction after `rep'
/tmp/cc1gDLm4.s:229: Error: expecting string instruction after `rep'
make[3]: *** [arch/x86/boot/compressed/string.o] Error 1
make[3]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
/tmp/ccHGocv5.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/ccHGocv5.s:1187: Error: expecting string instruction after `rep'

git-bisecting showed that the build failure still occurred for a kernel
version that had previously built on the earlier gcc-4.8 from unstable.

Building using gcc-4.7 and using gcc-4.8 4.8.0-7 worked.
