The m68k support came rather late during gcc-4.4 development,
since that was what was in unstable at that time, so probably
after these two branched off.

I don't think so. But others from the gcc-4.4 branch need to
be checked. We have a known-working gcc-4.4 version in
unstable, gcc-4.3 is known to be buggy as hell in several
places but otherwise working, gcc-4.1 got IIRC removed, and
no other compiler has been even looked at.
