Bug#590038: Update

I downloaded and  built gcc/g++-4.5, and got the same problem.
I was about to report a bug directly to gcc.gnu.org where I read

-> C -> Casting does not work as expected when optimization is turned on.
adding -fstrict-aliasing to the compiler command line solved the (my)
problem, with gcc/g++-4.5 and with the already installed gcc/g++-4.4 
from Squeeze.

I would close this bug with a resolution of notabug but after reading
http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer#closing
and following a few links I ended up back at this page, so I'm giving up on
trying to close this bug myself - I understand that "close" is deprecated.
