Package: cpp-4.3
Version: 4.3.2-9
Severity: minor

This last upload has this in its changelog entry:

 gcc-4.3 (4.3.1-9) unstable; urgency=low

   * Update to SVN 20080814 from the gcc-4_3-branch.

The problem is that this update changes the upstream version number to
4.3.2 (officially released 2008-08-27, and which was a release candidate
at the time of the changelog entry). As a consequence, cpp-4.3 provides a
symlink /usr/lib/gcc/<arch>/4.3.2 instead of /usr/lib/gcc/<arch>/4.3.1.
This may break gnat-4.3 in a subtle way; see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnat-4.3/+bug/250173

The proper fix is to acknowledge the new upstream version number in the
package (i.e. 4.3.2~rc1-1, or even 4.3.2-1 with another update), and
request a new upload of gnat-4.3 to match. I'll be happy to do the
latter.

closing. this was an oversight in the 4.3.2-0ubuntu2 upload to Ubuntu
intrepid, not in the Debian package. The Debian package has:

$ ls -l /usr/lib/gcc/i486-linux-gnu/
total 4
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 Aug 23 02:41 4.3
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    3 Jul 23 06:21 4.3.1 -> 4.3
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    3 Jul 22 16:23 4.3.2 -> 4.3

I did freeze the version, because the package was frozen. There will
be always a difference in the package and upstream version. Uploading
each time upstream tarballs of the form 4.3.2~svn2008mmdd doesn't
convince me as well. Note that gcc -v displays the package version as
well, so you will know which source were used to build the
package. afaik gnat does display the package version as well.

I'll prepare a 4.3.2 upload for unstable in svn, and proposing this to
the release team.
