| I can reproduce this with 4.2.1-5 and 4.3.0 20070829. Test case:

Many thanks, Falk. I'll prepare 1.9.90-2 where Alpha gets -O2.  BTW do we
still need this special case for Alpha:

# edd 29 Sep 2005   alpha needs -mieee with gcc 4.0

endif
