Memory exhausted while linking Java

Trying to build Java enabled GCC for the first time on NetBSD (gcc-3.3
package). It runs out of memory while trying to do what looks like the
final linkage on something like a couple hundred .o files; this is on a
512M box that gets nowhere close to swapping, much less actually running
out of memory.

What is the correct way to debug this?
