which compiler/architecture do you use? The current memtest package uses:

gcc -c -Wall -march=i486 -Os -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-builtin -ffreestanding -fPIC reloc.c

hmm, it builds fine for me using the current gcc-3.3 in unstable.
