Installing the full gcc suite on a sarge box, I discover that gnats-3.n conflicts with all the preceding version.

I suppose you mean GNAT, not GNATS.

Yep.

Is there a particular reason for that ? I didn't find the
information greping the changelog.

All those packages provide the same set of commands, under the name.

You mean binaries under /usr/bin/gnat*. Same pb for the manpages.

Therefore, it is not possible to install them in parallel.

Any reason not to use the same trick than for the other packages from the suite (gcc, g77, gcj, gpc etc...). That is, have /usr/bin/gnat*-version in the <> packages and provide a gnat-fsf package with the symlink. Using update-alterative & friends is also an option.

At the present on an uptodate sarge box, I can provide g*-2.95, g*-3.3, g*-3.4 (and maybe 3.2) for almost all the tools from the suite but not for gnat.
