I wasn't suggesting dropping 486/586 entirely, just providing binaries
optimized for 686.

Could even make gcc-3.x a virtual package, and let

    gcc-3.x-i386   // works for anything
    gcc-3.x-i686   // particularly for the majority of the users

both Provide: the virtual package.
