Does this still happen when you compile with gcc-3.2?

The description of the problem sounds right, and the proposed fix using
a version script is a reasonable one.  But, with newer versions of gcc,
libcrypto.so should be linked against the shared libgcc rather than the
static one, and the problem ought not to arise.
