As you might know C++ is not the same thing as C. Did you upgrade g++ as well as gcc? Try "apt-get install g++". You also should check versions of g++ and libstdc++ and especially libstdc++-dev with dpkg.

The first try should always occur in /usr/local. Also, chroot is very helpful command.

In such a case, all I can suggest is to reinstall the compiler and libstdc++ using apt-get.
