The patch from Franz Sirl (or part of it) caused a pre-stage-1 build
failure on Alpha. I haven't had the time to isolate which part of the
patch caused a problem, but removing the whole patch allowed it to compile
fully.
I'll see if I can isolate which part caused the problem (admittedly, I
haven't really looked at it much yet).
