We should inform users in the package description for fonts-texgyre that the fonts get registered as alternatives for the 35 core Postscript fonts in fontconfig. This might -- but shouldn't -- lead to undesired behaviour.
Maybe the Depends of tex-gyre on fonts-texgyre should be versioned.The tex-gyre package still has empty /etc/fonts/conf.avail and /usr/share/texmf/fonts/opentype/public/tex-gyre directories.

Debhelper compat level 5? And as a more general question, why are you so opposed to static .install and .links files in the debian/ directory?
