lenny-backports was discontinued today, so the only backporting would need to be to squeeze. But squeeze has debhelper 8.0.0 already, so in the future there's no need to downgrade compatability to anything below 8 for the sake of backporting.
(also, the backports folks do a pretty good job of keeping debhelper itself backported, and it's considered reasonable to build-depend on the backported debhelper if you need it)
