IMHO for font packages it is useful to have specimens of text rendering
which font designers frequently provide as pdf. What would be the ideal
sources to provide if .odt is not sufficient?

Would it be possible to build the PDF from the ODT only? Would the
fonts themselves be required? Would other fonts be required? Perhaps
the PDF could be created in debian/rules build to be sure - this way
we test Debian's PDF building toolchains too :)

That would be an interesting challenge to look into. I suspect it to be non-trivial especially for smart fonts to get the build env right, OOo is a rather big dependency...

/me makes a note for the future.

I do agree with you that building from source is where we should go for all our font packages, but it will take time...
