Hi everyone, The slides for the the "Open Fonts in Debian BoF" ( https://penta.debconf.org/~joerg/events/67.en.html) are now available on http://www.yosch.org/conferences/DebConf2007/ I realise there was way too much stuff on the slides and that we probably didn't take enough time to discuss the issues specifically relevant to the short-term work of the pkg-fonts team in Debian and the corresponding team in Ubuntu are looking at. So much to say on this very rich subject... And some of the wider-picture things are also important to grasp. I know many of you are already aware of what is going on but I hope it gave you an overview of the various efforts underway in the area of open fonts and the corresponding writing systems components. I hope you will look at the various website that I presented to check out the work done in these communities. There is a good momentum building in this area IMHO. I really think the Debian community can help bring this work much further and more specifically out to the user base as well as providing a friendly environment for designers. I'm pretty sure it will provide pointers and get more people aware of the needs and challenges we have and hopefully get more folks committed to "draining the font swamp" as mdz recently put it. Whether you are attending DebConf or not, let's continue discussing what short-term goals we can work on in the following months in the lenny cycle and how this can be reflected in the Ubuntu gustsy (and gutsy+1) release cycle. Personally, I'll be working on more packaging of open fonts and getting more of the open font design toolkit in the archive over the next few days. And continuing the review of fonts already in the archive to reduce duplication and licensing problems. What are your suggestions for short-term goals within the team(s)? Do you know of good open fonts we should target? Have you found a software gem that can be useful with fonts that we don't have in the archive or ITP'ed yet? Do you know about designers or font projects who we should contact to advocate a open model of collaborative font design? Btw, one of the proposed release goals for the i18n team which we discussed yesterday is relevant to the work done in the font team(s): - Prepare the system to be able to have a default font for each language. We would need a better set of fonts installed for each language we have what's needed to install a set of fonts depending on the language. However, how to make the default font the correct one ? something like update-font_alternatives could be an idea (aba) then it could become a release goal Thanks for your contributions!
