Re: [Pkg-fonts-devel] How to get fontconfig to use fonts.conf files stored in /etc/fonts/conf.d

Hi,

Assuming both fonts provide the same FontNames and you have some (not purely subjective) grounds for considering your font superior, just register it with defoma using a higher priority.  fontconfig.defoma will then make sure the symlinks in /var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d/ point to your version.

(defoma has lots of faults, but it does handle font conflicts fairly well)

No the FontNames are not same. The problem is that ttf-freefonts has glyphs of Indic languages, but the conjuncts are not defined properly, hence ttf-freefonts is not suitable. ttf-indic-fonts has fonts designed explicitly to work with Indic languages, however pango/other rendering engines, use ttf-freefonts even when Indian locales are used. For example for the bn_IN and bn_BD locales, people usually prefer the Mukti or the Lohit Bengali font, but pango by default uses Freesans/Freeserif. Similarly for hi_IN, people prefer the Gargi font, but again FreeSans/Freeserif is used. I was wondering how to make sure that for some locales, the fonts are chosen from ttf-indic-fonts, without affecting the default fonts for the other locales.

Inside ttf-indic-fonts, I've set the proper defoma priorities to the fonts, so that the appropriate fonts are given priority.

Thanks
